Nuceria Alfaterna Etruscan, Samnite and Roman births of today’s urban centers.
Still towards the south and we are in Nuceria Alfaterna, today Nocera Inf. and Sup., the city was founded by the union of several villages scattered in the current Agro Nocerino-Sarnese. At the end of the 7th century BC the autochthonous populations of the valley for strategic reasons above all went to settle towards the sea, some inland others, giving life to Nuvkrinum (literally the “new fortress”), colonizing a strategic place (obligatory passage between the gulfs of Naples and Salerno ) guarding a fertile valley. The center was born, therefore, as an Etruscan settlement around the end of the 7th century BC
The city was still active under the Byzantine administration, whose attempt to give new impetus is witnessed by the erection of the splendid baptistery of Santa Maria Maggiore, one of the rare examples in Italy of baptistery in the Justinian age.
The tour begins with a guided tour of the POCALOCHRISTAN BAPTISTERY OF NOCERA SUP. , BADIA DI CAVA DE ’TIRRENI, VIETRIAN CERAMICS YESTERDAY AND TODAY
The tour will be illustrated, with image screenings and folder distribution, in the evening before in our indoor room and is inclusive of transfers and tour guide.
